CCA Recognized as Employer of Choice for Military Veterans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For military veterans considering going “From Camouflage to Corrections,” Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) has long been touted as an employer of choice in the private corrections management industry. Recent national coverage by G.I. Jobs magazine and an honor from The American Legion support military servicepersons’ continued attraction to CCA as a professional destination for establishing and building long-lasting careers.

CCA, the leading provider of corrections management services to federal, state and local government, is prominently featured in two stories in the September issue of G.I. Jobs magazine. The publication, which is widely read by military service persons preparing for civilian employment, has previously recognized CCA as a “Top 50 Military-Friendly Employer ®.” In the latest issue, CCA is spotlighted as a solid employer for servicepersons in a feature-length story on the growing field of corrections and the personal success story of a military veteran at the company’s San Diego Correctional Facility, where approximately half of the employees are veterans.

“It is heartening to know that CCA is not only dedicated to hiring veterans, but also helps them prepare for their post-military careers by participating in this coverage,” said Joshua Hudson, managing editor, G.I. Jobs. “Veterans have more to offer than just technical skills. They have those intangibles, such as a ‘can do’ attitude, that make companies successful. CCA gets that.”

CCA was also recently selected by The American Legion’s National Economics Commission as the “2007 Large Employer of the Year” for the State of Georgia, in recognition of the company’s efforts in recruiting and employing military veterans at its Stewart Detention Center, located in Lumpkin, Ga.

The American Legion found that of the 72 employees hired at the facility during the award’s assessment period of July 1, 2006-June 30, 2007, 33 – or 46 percent – were veterans. Additionally, the organization found that veterans represented 21 percent of the work force at Stewart Detention Center – far outpacing the minimum 10 percent required to be considered for the distinction.

“CCA and Stewart Detention Center have shown a strong commitment to hiring veterans,” said Randy Goodman, employment committee chair of The American Legion, Department of Georgia. “Their numbers show an immediate push to hire veterans. With the war on terrorism, more and more veterans are returning home and looking for work. CCA – and Stewart Detention Center – are meeting a very timely need.”

“We are proud to be a career destination for military servicepersons, who comprise approximately 10 percent of CCA’s national work force,” added Bill Rusak, CCA chief human resources officer. “The culture of the military and corrections share a deep sense of pride, duty and camaraderie. Veterans are also familiar with our cultural similarities – wearing a uniform, respecting an established chain of command, earning advancement through dedication and operating in a safe and secure environment.”
