CCA Rolls Out G.I. Bill Program to Texas Employees

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Now distinguished as a G.I. Bill-approved employer, Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the nation’s leading provider of corrections management services to federal, state and local government, is providing an extra benefit to military veterans employed at two of its Texas facilities – Mineral Wells Pre-Parole Transfer Facility, located in Mineral Wells, and Dawson State Jail in Dallas.

After undergoing a comprehensive review of its professional training programs by the Division of Apprentice Training at the Department of Veterans Affairs, CCA piloted the G.I. Bill benefit program at its Mineral Wells facility in July. Dawson State Jail was approved as a G.I. Bill workplace in August.

Through the program, military veterans working as correctional officers are eligible to receive G.I. Bill benefits for participating in specialty career training, which may add, on average, $600-$800 per month to their gross pay for up to eight months.

“We are very proud to offer this program to our employees at Mineral Wells who have already demonstrated a high level of service and commitment by serving our nation,” said Bill Rusak, CCA chief human resources officer. “As a G.I. Bill-approved employer, CCA joins other highly visible companies that have achieved this distinction, such as Lockheed Martin, Cessna Aircraft, Merck Pharmaceuticals and others. This effectively raises the profile of CCA as a choice employer and of corrections as a rewarding career option.”

Employees may use the salary supplement, which they receive for the duration of their training program, at their discretion.

“These funds may be used to further one’s education, decrease debt or save wisely,” said Warden Mike Phillips of Mineral Wells.

“In today’s economy, CCA offers employment in a recession-resistant industry, now with an extra incentive at our facility that can make a significant impact in the lives of our professionals – and their families,” added Warden Chuck Keeton of Dawson State Jail.

CCA has been named among the nation’s “Top 50 Military-Friendly Employers” ® by G.I. Jobs magazine, with a national workforce that is approximately 10 percent veteran-based.

“These men and women, who have served our nation so courageously, continue providing a needed public service in communities in the community of Mineral Wells, as well as throughout the state of Texas and the nation,” said Rusak.
