CCA Provides Emergency Relief in Wake of Hurricane Ike

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On the morning of September 11, 2008, Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) sprung into action as weather warnings became direr and the call to evacuate became more insistent in the wake of Hurricane Ike.

The provider of corrections management services swiftly responded to a request from one of its federal customers – Immigration and Customs Enforcement – to evacuate the nearly 800 detainees housed in its Houston Processing Center in Texas, as a precautionary measure due to the impending arrival of the hurricane.

Working closely with ICE officials, CCA management and subsidiary inmate transportation company TransCor collaborated closely to ensure a safe and smooth transfer of the detainees. All female detainees, numbering approximately 100, were safely transferred to the CCA-managed Hernando County Jail in Brooksville, Florida. The male detainees, numbering approximately 700, were transported to CCA’s owned and operated Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, Mississippi. An additional 260 male detainees were also evacuated by ICE to Tallahatchie from Montgomery County Jail in Texas, which is operated by another private corrections provider.

“This was another amazing accomplishment by the CCA/TransCor team,” said Rick Seiter, CCA executive vice president and chief corrections officer. “Within just 24 hours of being told to evacuate, our team essentially pulled a rabbit out of a top hat. Their dedication, leadership and talent ensured a seamless and safe transition for those transported to safety in advance of this natural disaster.”
